The organization of the biomedical research Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory is based in a set of agents: research staff (researchers, scholars, technicians and collaborators), the advisory executive boards from the “Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón” (Research Coordinator, Clinical Research and Ethic Committee and Research Committee) and the Foundation for Biomedical Research of the “Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón”.

Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory research facilities can be classified in 3 types: Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón large equipment, own facilities, and facilities belonging to other research Centers.

Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory has the facility resources and equipment required to perform both different research lines and processing and cryopreservation of HIV BioBank samples.

The research laboratory has:

- Radioactive Unit
- Cool Room
- Informatics and Statics Unit with the equipment required for research work
- High securities Culture Unit for HIV and infectious samples work and Research Unit. The Culture Unit has Class II safety cabinets, microscopes, centrifuges, an automatic separates of cell populations, incubators.The Research Laboratory has automatic RT-PCR, thermocyclers, flow cytometers, microcentrifuges, centrifuges, transfection systems, plate reader, scintillation counter, nanodrop, Class II safety cabinets and cryopreservation equipment…

The HIV BioBank has:

- The sample processing laboratory that has 3 Class II safety cabinets, 3 microscopes, incubators, thermostatic bath, automatic cells counter, microcentrifuge, centrifuges, thermocyclers and a flow cytometer.
- The Cryopreservation area has 6 -80ºC freezers, 3 nitrogen tanks and a low temperature ramp.

The Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón has supporting Research Units that include:

- Sequencing Unit is a unit which enables the analysis of DNA by sequencing fragments from 500 bp to 1500 bp and SNP analysis. The main users are the groups and Department of Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory, Pharmacy, Clinical Microbiology, Genetics, Hematology, Metabolopathies and Experimental Medicine and Surgery. The activity of the line has increased every year since it started in 2002.

- Pharmacogenetic and Pharmacogenomic Unit is equipped with a bioanalyst 2100 (Agilent Technologies), thermal cyclers, a Roche Affymetrix microarray diagnostic platform Agilent microarray hybridization oven, etc. It is headed by a Dr. López and has public and private funding to develop three lines on pharmacogenomics applied to colorectal cancer with extramural collaborations. Intramural partnerships include the intramural Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory, Immunology, Medical Oncology and Rheumatology.

- Confocal Microscopy Unit from 2004 it works with a Leica TCS-SP2-AOBS-of-the-top and a technical support contract with the research, is being used by many research groups, as stated in the reports submitted the purpose.

- Flow Cytometry Unit is being organized this year (2009). It is based on a flow cytometer and fluorescence analyzer seven particle separator and cells with a high speed and superior technical support contract with the investigation. The Flow Cytometry Unit includes a Gallios Beckman Coulter cytometer and a microscope Nikon Eclipse 50i.

- Medical Image Laboratory. This Laboratory has developed several PET equipment and high-resolution CT pioneers in Spain. The laboratory is home to almost thirty professionals from different disciplines. This will allow validation of the results and facilitation their transfer to industry and thus, back to the patient. Also noteworthy are their contributions to the field of telemedicine. The divisions involved directly in the collaboration with this laboratory include Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Neurosurgery, Radiotherapy, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory and others.

- Cellular Therapy Unit is giving service to the various medical disciplines who want to implementation cell therapy treatment in the Hospital. These facilities will obtain, handle and deliver cells expanded ex vivo under "conditions of GMPs quality. This allows the support of different R & D lines in Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine, not only in our hospital, but in hospitals in our geographic area. At present, these facilities are under the inspection process required by the AEMPS after which they will come into operation.

Agreement with other research Centers also allow the Immune Molecular Biology Laboratory to use other facilities.

- For animal research, the animal facilities at Centro de Biología Molecular “Severo Ochoa” can be used.

- For experimental requirement HIV-infected animal a P3 area in the Centro de Vigilancia Sanitaria Veterinaria (VISAVET) at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid can be used.
